If Wolverine Had A Mobile Phone

Have you ever thought what it’s like to have super powers? Of course, you did! But what if your mobile phone was the one with super powers?!

Nowadays, technology is exponentially developing and there are new fascinating discoveries and inventions almost every day. One of these amazing inventions is a self-healing material that can stitch itself back together after damage.

Researcher Chao Wang, who’s a scientist in the American Chemical Society, recently said that he has been working on a new polymer that can heal itself. Inspired by Wolverine, his childhood idol, Chao said that he wanted to create something that has its power of self-healing to change the world into a better one like Wolverine did many times. However, the key to this super power is chemical bonds.

In order to make a material that can heal itself, you want its chemical bonds to be noncovalent -to be able to break and re-form over and over.

Scientists have created self-healing polymers before, but the noncovalent bonds they’ve used haven’t been appropriate for something that needs to conduct electricity, like a smartphone screen or a soft robot. The material that Chao and his team used was made up of particles that formed ion-dipole interactions, a type of force that is formed between charged ions and polar molecules and is much better for conducting electricity. In addition, the new material could stretch up to 50 times its size, and automatically put itself back together after being torn in half.

This invention is truly a game-changer! It means that this new material would be able to repair the phone’s screen or even battery within just 48 hours! The material would recover all of its mechanical properties, including conductivity and elasticity. Another benefit? Well, most of the components used to make this material are relatively low-cost as Chao said.

In the near future, we will see many products in market made of this new self-healing material. It will be used for mobile phones, smart television screens and for batteries too. This material will change our life and enhance the performance and productivity of our mobile phones.

In a couple years, instead of our boring regular mobile phones, we might have a mobile with super powers, Wolverine’s super powers! How awesome is that?
